Community Service Opportunities for Middle and High School Students

January 1 – December 31, 2024

Jennie Drake Park, dedicated in May of 2011, is a City of Atlanta Park, located at 645 Waterford Road, NW, in Historic Collier Heights. The park is in Atlanta City Council District 9 and in Neighborhood Planning Unit-I (NPU-I). It consists of close to five wooded acres. A stream that is a tributary of Sandy Creek flows through the park. In 2013, the Friends of Jennie Drake Park completed a visioning process, guided by Park Pride.

Volunteer Dates for 2024:

3rd Monday – January 16 (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day)

3rd Saturdays – February 17, March 16, April 20, May 18, June 15, July 20, August 17. September 21, October 19, & November 16′

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon

Tasks: Tasks for volunteers may include, but are not limited to, the following: (1) applying wood chips to create a path; (2) removing invasive plants, especially English ivy and Chinese privet; (3) planting shrubbery and flowers; (4) picking up litter; and (5) distributing flyers in the neighborhood about upcoming activities.

Tips for Volunteers:

  • Cover their arms and legs and wear shoes that cover and protect their feet.
  • Wear a hat or cap for protection from the sun and/or cold.
  • Bring masks if they are bothered by dust.

Note: We will provide water, snacks, bug spray, work gloves, work tools, trash bags, etc. Volunteers should bring their own reusable water bottles.

Parking: Park on the street (northeast side of Waterford Road), but not alongside the park where volunteers will work.

Gathering Place: Sign in at the driveway of 681 Waterford Road, next to the park.

Note: High school students and volunteers under the age of 18 will need permission from their parents/guardians. They should request the permission form and bring the signed form when they report to the volunteer site.
