2015- The Year in Review

2015 was a busy and very productive year for Jennie Drake Park.  Our Park Entrance was finally completed, bricks were set and benches in place.   In October, the Bennett Thrasher Volunteers completed a large part of our vision by building a bridge across the creek and a path on the other side.  We now have walking trails throughout the Park, benches to sit on and, in the spring, lots of new plants to see.

None of this would have happened if it wasn’t for:

  • The volunteers who gave up their Saturday mornings to spread mulch, pick up trash, clear land, and plant flowers
  • Those individuals who bought bricks, benches and t-shirts
  • The Atlanta City Council members
  • Neighborhood Planning Unit I
  • Park Pride and the guidance from Walt, John and Becky
  • Support from the Historic Collier Heights Neighborhood
Thank you,
The Jennie Drake Park Steering Committee

November 21st Work Session

Students from North Atlanta High School came by to help us with this month’s work session:

October 29th Bennett Thrasher Workday

On October 29th, volunteers from the Bennett Thrasher accounting firm spent the day at Jennie Drake Park.  Volunteers built bridges, walking paths, removed debris, and planted native plants.  Thanks to Park Pride for organizing the event, all of the volunteers from Bennett Thrasher who participated in the work day, and Jeff Killingsworth from Beech Hollow Wildflower Farm .  Special thanks to Atlanta City Council Member Felicia Moore who connected Bennett Thrasher with Jennie Drake Park.

October 17th Work Session

On a very cool Saturday morning, we planted Pansies, red and yellow Mums and Rhododendrons.  The plants were part of a Grant from the City of Atlanta’s Neighborhood Planning Unit I.  Volunteers also mulched and cleaned up the Park

Volunteer Appreciation Cookout

Following the September work session, the Jennie Drake Park Steering Committee held a cookout for the Park’s volunteer workers. Thanks to Ben Norman who manned the grill and Miriam Miller who provided the baked beans.

Jennie Drake Park at Collier Heights “Night Out”

For the second year in a row, Jennie Drake Park provided King of Pops (www.kingofpops.net) icy treats to the Collier Heights National Night Out celebration. National Night Out helps to create a relationship between neighborhoods and law enforcement under positive conditions.  Everyone had a great time!

Jennie Drake Park has received at $500 grant from the City of Atlanta NPU-I. The grant is being used to buy plants and planting supplies for the Park. Jennie Drake Park Treasurer, Jim Gantner, stated “this grant allows us to purchase needed tools like rakes, gloves and a wheelbarrow, as well as supplies for our planting beds. We will be also adding several varieties of annuals to areas of the Park.”
