Following the September work session, the Jennie Drake Park Steering Committee held a cookout for the Park’s volunteer workers. Thanks to Ben Norman who manned the grill and Miriam Miller who provided the baked beans.

Jennie Drake Park at Collier Heights “Night Out”

For the second year in a row, Jennie Drake Park provided King of Pops (www.kingofpops.net) icy treats to the Collier Heights National Night Out celebration. National Night Out helps to create a relationship between neighborhoods and law enforcement under positive conditions.  Everyone had a great time!

Jennie Drake Park Receives Grant from NPU-I

Jennie Drake Park has received at $500 grant from the City of Atlanta NPU-I. The grant is being used to buy plants and planting supplies for the Park. Jennie Drake Park Treasurer, Jim Gantner, stated “this grant allows us to purchase needed tools like rakes, gloves and a wheelbarrow, as well as supplies for our planting beds. We will be also adding several varieties of annuals to areas of the Park.”

June 20th Work Session

Last October, we began working on the area of Jennie Drake Park at the corner of Oldknow Drive and Waterford Road. This had been a dumping ground for many years. On the October 18th work session,  we pulled out several tires and filled a lot of bags with bottles, cans and other trash. We also pulled out a roll of chain link fence that someone had dumped there.

On Saturday, June 20th,  with the help of the City of Atlanta Corrections Department, a group of inmates, directed by Officer Ronald Jordan, built a path from the corner of the Park down to the main trail. As you can see from the pictures, the area (and the path) looks great!

Turtle in the Park

This little guy/gal was found nesting near the Park entrance by Pauline and Michael Drake.  They moved the turtle into the Park near the stream.  It appears to be an Eastern Mud Turtle http://srelherp.uga.edu/turtles/kinsub.htm

May 16th and 23rd Work Sessions

We had a scheduled work session on May 16, where we extended the mulch path close to the second bench inside the Park.  We also had a mini work session on the 23rd, planting annuals given to us by the City of Atlanta Parks Department.  Those participating in the work sessions were Cesar De Jesus, Michael Drake, Pauline Drake, Jim Gantner, Michael C. Howard, Dawn Jackson-Robinson, Bryan Jenkins, Leola McKinney; and our youth volunteers Malik Norman, Naggee Norman, Rahsaan Norman, and Isaac Robinson.
